Malawi’s Minister of Tourism, Vera Kamtukule, finds herself embroiled in controversy after promoting South Africa’s popular music genre, Amapiano, as part of Malawian culture. The move has sparked heated debates within the entertainment industry and among citizens.

Amapiano, characterized by its infectious beats, soulful melodies, and danceable rhythms, has taken the African music scene by storm. Originating in South Africa, it has rapidly gained international recognition. However, its roots lie distinctly in South African townships, where it emerged as a fusion of house music, jazz, and kwaito.

In an advertisement campaign aimed at promoting Malawi’s cultural diversity, Minister Kamtukule featured Amapiano music prominently. The video showcased vibrant dance moves, catchy tunes, and scenes from Malawi’s picturesque landscapes. While the intention was to celebrate music and unity, critics argue that the Minister missed the mark.

The mister received backlash saying she is, Neglecting Local Artists. By spotlighting Amapiano, Minister Kamtukule inadvertently diverted attention from Malawian musicians. Local artists, who have been working tirelessly to create unique sounds, feel overshadowed by the global Amapiano trend.

Identity Crisis. Some citizens worry that this move blurs the lines between Malawian identity and external influences. They fear losing their distinct cultural expressions in the pursuit of international appeal.

Minister Kamtukule defended her decision, emphasizing the need for Malawi to embrace global music trends. She believes that Amapiano can coexist with local genres and enhance cultural exchange
