Iraqi Social Media Influencer Om Fahad Shot Dead in Baghdad

Om Fahad, whose real name is Ghufran Sawadi, was a well-known Iraqi social media influencer with nearly half a million followers on TikTok. She gained fame for posting light-hearted videos where she danced to Iraqi music. However, tragedy struck when she was shot dead outside her home in Baghdad's Zayouna district.

On Friday, an unidentified gunman on a motorbike targeted Om Fahad. The attacker posed as a food delivery rider, luring her into a false sense of security. The incident occurred in the capital's eastern Zayne neighborhood.

Om Fahad faced legal challenges in the past. In February last year, she was sentenced to six months in prison for sharing videos that a court deemed to contain "indecent speech that undermines modesty and public morality." Her content had drawn attention from authorities during a 2023 campaign by the Iraqi government to clamp down on social media content that broke the country's "morals and traditions." This tragic incident highlights the risks faced by social media influencers and the importance of maintaining safety in an increasingly digital world.
